A Hopeful Path Forward for the Hughes Stadium Property

ree

I’ve been involved with the Hughes Stadium property longer than I ever expected to be, and from the beginning, I believe the city mishandled its approach—particularly in how it communicated the zoning intentions and use rights. I was part of the coalition that supported a balanced vision: partially developing the land to include affordable housing and childcare while preserving around 86 acres as open space. Unfortunately, that effort stalled, largely due to pressure from a vocal minority that has repeatedly influenced decisions, even when broader public input pointed in a different direction.

Through the 2021 vote, ongoing civic engagement, and now the Civic Assembly process, I believe the people of Fort Collins have been clear: they want most of the land preserved as open space, while still allowing for some thoughtful, low-impact uses.

I also share your concern about the financial implications of converting the entire area into a natural space. The city likely overpaid for the property by $6–8 million, and environmental remediation to address decades of car-related pollutants and debris was estimated in our initial analysis to cost another $3–5 million. With the city facing a budget shortfall, this is not where we should be overspending.

There’s a way forward that respects Indigenous interests and honors the broader community’s desire for a balanced outcome. A light, mixed-use concept—potentially including features like a BMX bike park or similar community-serving elements—reflects the direction residents have repeatedly asked for. We need continued open dialogue, not more intimidation or misinformation from those upset by the outcome of democratic processes.

I agree with you that the best solution honors the public’s voice: preserving much of the land as open space while introducing strategic uses that offer lasting community benefit. Let’s keep pushing for a plan that reflects our shared values and long-term vision.
